IHU and VMware Player

12 November, 2007 (23:11) | Remote | By: sm3sgp

We have for long time been looking for a solution to run IHU, on a Windows computer. IHU is the best program we have found so far to transfer Audio from the remote radio. It is only available for Linux. Ulf/LCB tried the VMware Player and one of the “Browser images” and it works!

Here is a quick step-by-step, how to get it running:

  1. Download and install the VMware Player, http://www.vmware.com/download/player/
  2. Download an “image”. Example: http://www.vmware.com/appliances/directory/browserapp.html
  3. Start VMware Player and select and boot the “image”.
  4. In the booted viritual computer, start firefox and download the static binary of IHU: http://ihu.sourceforge.net/download.html
  5. Unpack IHU and start. Read IHU documentation for more information.

Remote CW

CW PIC Server

During the past two weeks development of the remote control has taken a few steps further. SM0LCB’s solution for remote paddle has been tested and improved.

Ulf released several versions of the software, and it has finally been tested successfully. On the remote side, where the radio is located, a small CW PIC Server has been installed and on the client side a similar PIC is used. The client PIC is connected to the computer via USB/Serial adapter and a small program is started on windows and connected to a similar server program on the remote computer. (Client side Windows, remote side Linux). The program itself can work both on the client side or remote side, and is available for both Linux and Windows.

In the first tests we experienced that the CW was interrupted or not not transmitted with a continues speed. A small buffer was introduced in the CW server software and the problem is more or less gone. It is still possible to hear some characters that are transmitted with wrong length, a dah that sounds like a daaaah, but still usable. Further tests will show if we need to do more improvements. For now, it is excellent and finally it is possible to get a real CW feeling remote.

Software will be available on SM7LCB’s site when final tests has been done.
